Everyone has a unique experience dealing with COVID-19. Many lost their jobs, their homes, even their friends and families. It created an impact that society will feel for years to come. I was very lucky during the first couple waves to keep the important things in my life like my job and family safe. However, COVID still found a way to change my life.
Although it’s been two years since the initial wave that shut down classrooms, offices and small businesses, we are still feeling the effects of the virus today. Whether it’s discourse about masks, vaccines, or quarantine, COVID is a hot topic that won’t go away any time soon.
Imagine being a bright-eyed freshman looking forward to experiencing everything that college had to offer. It went smoothly for the first semester, but then everything went downhill Spring 2020. Unsure of what the best step would be, administration took the safest one; they sent all students and faculty home for spring break for quarantine. Adapting to the change was interesting to say the least. Personally, the information that I learned during the last couple of weeks of classes over Zoom went completely over my head. I want to thank the staff that worked hard to adapt to the abrupt change to provide the best education they could considering the circumstances.
Fast forward, a quarantined summer passed by and school was in session again. Once again, classes were on Zoom except this time we were on campus. Despite many people living in the dorms, the campus felt like a ghost town. Events were either cancelled or postponed, and anything that was happening always left me feeling bittersweet and think about how things could have turned out differently. Even though the circumstances of wearing a mask, staying inside, and meeting in only small groups appealed to my introverted tendencies, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. I was missing the life I could have lived if COVID hadn’t changed everything. The first time things have finally felt normal was this semester, where the class sizes are growing and events are happening all around campus. Still, the threat of a repeat of the events of 2020 is still prevalent. I am hopeful that things can change soon so that we can learn from the events of the past two years and grow from the experience.
In the Spring semester of 2021, I took a class called Video Production Foundations. It was an interesting class where we learned techniques on creating videos for productions like interviews and personal use. For my final assignment, I created a video that shows my personal experience dealing with the changes that came with COVID. In creating that video, I hoped that others would relate to the message of leaving the time before covid behind and working towards a brighter future for us all. Check out the results of many hours of filming and editing and let me know what you think about my video!
Stay safe, stay healthy!
