Making Websites is Hard…

I created this blog for my WordPress class at UNK. The whole class is centered around learning how to use and navigate one of the most popular website creation sites in world. So far, it has been my favorite class that I have taken this school year. Not only am I learning valuable knowledge about WordPress that I can use for my professional and personal career in the future, I am also being creative with the process. I really appreciate classes that teach you skills and don’t hold you down with restrictions on how to use them.

WordPress is so much more versatile and fun to use then I expected. I like that WordPress has the option of creating a website completely from scratch using HTML, but I also appreciate their move to make it more accessible by implementing blocks into their editor. I am using a mix of both to create the vision of my website into reality. Some of stuff that I can’t do with the use of blocks can be changed using the classic editor. I really enjoy that part of WordPress.

I also like how WordPress embraces user created plugins to enhance our websites with. After seeing how many results show up on the plugins page, I can say that there is probably a plugin for anything you need for your website. The customization of WordPress is also impressive since I can choose from a large library of themes to base my website on.

One of the best resources that I was shown in class was Divi. It has so many modern elements to use and is block based for visual creation. I really like how clean Divi looks and the elements like the forms and scrolling features really help give the feeling of a professionally made website. At first, Divi is overwhelming to use but overtime gets easier. As much as I wanted to use Divi to make my website, I think that using something simpler helped me organize my ideas better.

Overall, I would say that making a website is hard! If you’re a complete beginner, maybe WordPress wouldn’t be the best place to start. Block based websites are really user friendly, so I understand why WordPress is trying to go in that direction to get more users on their site.

My experience creating this WordPress site was a positive one! I really enjoyed learning about each part of the site from the editor to the plugins. It was so cool to see how we can incorporate stuff like SEO and security to improve our sites. Especially at the beginning of this entire process, I didn’t think about how we needed a server and hosting plan to even have our website on the world wide web. Now I have knowledge on how to change aspects of my website on both the front and back end. This experience was really useful and I’m looking forward to seeing how I can use WordPress in the future!
